Tractor Trailer Accidents
Large commercial trucks are needed to transport goods across the United States.
Unfortunately, the increasing number of cars and trucks on the road has led to a high number of trucking accidents each year.
Due to a commercial truck’s large size and weight from the cargo they carry (some tractor trailers can weigh up to 80,000 pounds when fully loaded), a collision with a typical passenger car can be catastrophic. A trucks limited maneuverability can also cause an accident to occur in a situation that a smaller vehicle could have avoided.
A commercial truck driver is specially trained to drive a truck, but with the long hours and stiff deadlines many truckers face, their ability and response time may be compromised. Fatigue and stress can easily lead to a tragic accident that could have otherwise been avoided. A mechanical failure, an overloaded truck bed, or bad weather conditions can compromise the already unstable truck, and other motorists can unintentionally cause a collision by driving in a trucker’s blind spot or by changing lanes suddenly in front of them.
Each year, nearly 500,000 tractor trailers are involved in traffic accidents. Approximately 5,000 of these accidents result in fatalities. In fact, one out of every eight traffic fatalities is caused by a collision with a large truck. Not surprisingly, most of the deaths and injuries involve the passengers of the vehicles struck by tractor trailers. Truck drivers typically escape unharmed.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has implemented strict regulations on the number of consecutive hours a trucker may operate his tractor trailer. With the increasing pressure to deliver their loads, however, many drivers continue to operate their trucks in violation of these regulations. In a recent survey, 20% of long haul drivers admitted to falling asleep at the wheel.
